A beginning

I started work today as the Data Coordinator II for the Arius 3D Imaging Centre at the University of South Carolina. This unique collaboration between the School of Library and Information Science (at USC), the McKissick Museum, and the Arius 3D entities will help to create a 3D collection of the artifacts in the McKissick Museum's collections. I graduated from SLIS with my MLIS last May (2010) and just received my Certificate of Graduate Study in Library and Information Science this May. During my year of study for the Certificate, I focused my coursework on Digital Libraries and Digital Imaging in anticipation of the collaboration between the school and Arius 3D. This blog is set up partially as a research journal and partially as a vehicle for my thoughts and observations on starting a 3D imaging "lab." As of today (5-23-11) the scanner is still in Toronto Canada (and is "just waiting to be shipped" any day now).... what does this mean for my job?

Outside of work on course evaluations and preparations for the room in the McKissick Museum, I worked out a short term plan with Dr. Lewis. The website for the Centre needed to be finished and tested for usability. This process will involve getting an inventory of the progress and then gathering volunteers to help finish each section. Next we need to work on a database for all of the metadata that the Centre will generate for each item. What unique identifiers will we have and what naming conventions will we use? These issues and more will be researched over the next two weeks. Check back in for more...
